Argentinian fans teared up at the FIFA Fan Fest in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday as Germany beat their team in the World Cup final. Argentina supporters dominated the crowd on Copacabana beach, though some German fans were there to celebrate the win.

13 July 2014

A scuffle broke out at Fan Fest in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday following the FIFA World Cup Final between Germany and Argentina, Ruptly reports. The fight was between Argentinian and Brazilian supporters. No one was said to have been arrested.

Germany has won the 2014 World Cup following a 1-0 victory against Argentina in extra time. After a slow start, it was probably a deserved victory for the German's, who become the first European side to win the competition outside of their home continent. Mario Goetze got the only goal of the game, with seven minutes remaining, with an excellent finish, however, Argentina will be left to rue missing three very good chances, which should have wrapped up the match for them in normal time.

Mario Goetze could just have made himself the toast of Germany, with seven minutes to go in extra time. Germany lead Argentina 1-0. He chested down Schurlle's cross and pokes an excellent finish past Romero into the right-hand side of the net!

Aguero is very lucky to get away without a yellow card, which would have met the Manchester City forward would have been sent-off for a second bookable offense. Germany's Bastian Schweinsteiger has blood streaming from his face after he was caught by the Argentinian's swinging arm. Still 0-0 with around 10 minutes left in extra time.

Argentina create another very good opportunity, Palacio was put through by a fantastic ball by Rojo, however, the Inter Milan's first touch was heavy and then for some reason he tried to lift the ball over Neuer, which gave the German defense time to get back and clear. That is three excellent chances Argentina have had in this game.

A fairly uninspiring 2nd 45 minutes, with both sides not wanting to risk losing the game. The game is heading for 30 minutes of extra time.

It's all Germany at the moment, with Argentina unable to get control of the ball for any significant amount of time. Toni Kroos goes close with the a curling right footed effort from the edge of the penalty area.

The first half was very good, the second is failing to live up to the same billing. Both countries are not as open in their play, while Lionel Messi, who had a decent first half, being particularly anonymous. Still 0-0 with just over 10 minutes of normal time remaining.

Germany are a shadow of the side that beat Brazil 7-1 in the semi-finals. However, a lot of credit should be given to Argentina who have allowed Germany's attacking players no space at all. But for better finishing, the South American side would be comfortably leading this encounter.

Gonzalo Higuain is getting to his feet very gingerly following a heafty challenge by German goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer. He punches the ball clear for a throw, and then plants his knee into Higuain's ear. Germany are struggling to create any attacking opportunities and Argentina look the team likelier to score. Still 0-0.

The second half is underway and Lionel Messi has had an excellent chance very early on. He managed to spring Germany's offside trap, getting through on goal on his favored left foot, but he dragged his shot wide of Manuel Neuer's left hand post. Another very good opportunity for Argentina.

Around 70,000 Argentina fans have descended on Rio de Janeiro for the final, with only a tiny fraction of those having tickets for the game itself. However, they have certainly been making themselves heard in the run-up and during the match.

Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff and Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel react as they watch the 2014 World Cup final between Germany and Argentina at the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro July 13, 2014.

Police in Rio de Janeiro used tear gas to disperse a small group of protesters who tried to push past a blockade before the World Cup final on Sunday, a spokeswoman said.

The confrontation took place in the Seans Peña plaza, near the Maracana stadium about an hour before Argentina played Germany. Fans inside the stadium seemed unaware of the protest.

The military police spokeswoman declined to give further information but local media said about 200 protesters in the area had tried to make their way towards Maracana.

Protests across Brazil have petered out since the month-long soccer tournament started on June 12, but authorities are trying to preempt violence during the final now that Brazil is out of the tournament and online videos have encouraged violent fringe groups to return to the street. (Reuters)

0-0 at half time in the World Cup final between Germany and Argentina. It's been a lively game, unlike the final between these two side's in 1990. Argentina have had the better chances, however, Germany finished the half strongly.

A piece of magic by Lionel Messi almost opens the scoring for Argentina. He raced in on goal, but was hampered by a tight angle as Germany were just about able to clear his cross-shot. Germany have had a decent opportunity too, with Toni Kroos' shot being saved by the Argentine goalkeeper.

Germany have been forced to make a substitution with Christoph Kramer being replaced by Andre Schurrle, who has been in excellent form so far in this World Cup. Still 0-0 with seven minutes to go until half-time.

Argentina have just had a goal, quiet rightly disallowed for offside. Gonzalo Higuain providing a much better finish on this occasion, but unfortunately for him and his country, he was clearly offside when the ball was played to him. A let off for Germany, who have been guilty of some poor defending.

Germany were the big favorites coming into the game, but Argentina have started very well and are not giving their opponents any space to create and create shots on goal.

Best chance of the game so far for Argentina. Gonzalo Higuain was put clean through on goal, but forward struck his shot well wide of goal, with just Manuel Neuer to beat. He capitalized on a dreadful mistake by Toni Kroos, who tried to head the ball back to his keeper. Argentina may come to regret that miss.

German President Angela Merkel is also in the crowd, keeping a sharp eye on how her country are performing.

A lot of Argentina's hopes rest on the shoulders of Lionel Messi. The Barcelona forward has made a good start to the game and has already created one half chance for his country, but none of his teammates could get on the end of his intelligent cross.

The Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro is packed to capacity. It has been a cagey start from both sides.

Germany have the first opportunity of the match, with a free kick just outside the penalty area, following a foul on Thomas Muller, however, the resulting shot is hit straight into the Argentine defensive wall and the South American's are able to clear the ball to safety.

The two teams are on the pitch and the national anthems have been sung. This is the third time the two countries have met in a World Cup, with Argentina coming out victorious in 1986 and then West Germany gaining revenge four years later.

Germany's Thomas Muller could well end the tournament as the Golden Boot winner, for the competition's top scorer, for the second World Cup in succession after picking up the prize in 2010 in South Africa. He has five goals so far in Brazil four years on. However, before the last World Cup in 2010, the German was not even recognized by Argentina legend, Diego Maradona, who said in a press conference with Muller, that he would not sit with the German, as he believed he was a ball boy.

Incidentally, Maradona scored eight goals in four World Cup's spanning from 1982 until 1994. Muller already has nine and has yet to finish his second World Cup.

Germany are likely to have the backing of most Brazil when the game get's underway, due to the host nation's fierce rivalry with fellow South American nation Argentina. German midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, who will have the unenviable task of marking Lionel Messi, has been quick to say thanks to the people of Brazil.

Thanks to all Brazilians for your support&your hospitableness in the last weeks. You're amazing! #GERARG#WorldCup2014pic.twitter.com/8tx4uwEdsi

Meanwhile, Argentina have managed to reach the World Cup final despite, arguably never reaching their full potential. They needed penalties to overcome the Netherlands in the semi-finals. Star man, Lionel Messi may have four goals to his name so far in the competition, but he is yet to fully recapture the form that has made him the best player in the world this decade. Argentina are searching for their third World Cup triumph, having won the competition in 1978 and 1986.

Before the action on the pitch, there was the closing ceremony, which featured singer Shakira, who was singing at her third World Cup in succession. Also there were appearances from Carlos Santana, Wyclef Jean and Aleshandre Pires, who together sang Dar um Jeito, which is the official song of the 2014 World Cup.

Germany are hot favorites going into the game and with good reason. Joachim Low's side demolished the host nation, Brazil 7-1 in the semi-finals with an astonishing display of attacking football. If the German's do manage to win, this will be the fourth time they will have lifted the World Cup.

Germany take on Argentina in the World Cup final at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro. Kick-off will be in just over an hour. The game is being attended by dignitaries from around the world, including Russian President, Vladimir Putin. Following the conclusion of the final the baton will of course be handed over to Russia, who will hold football's biggest event in 2018.

The action was hot and heavy at the Fan Fest in Brasilia Saturday, despite the fact that Brazil's national football team fell to the Netherlands 3-0 in the third place game of the FIFA World Cup. Couples and other revelers were dancing the night away, after Brazil was outscored in its final two matches against Germany and Holland by a total of 10-1.

12 July 2014

The Netherlands sealed victory in the third-place play-off against Brazil, following a 3-0 win. A penalty from Robin van Persie after just two minutes, before Daley Blind added a second with a well taken strike, following a defensive error from David Luiz. Brazil tried to come back in the second half, with the introduction of Hulk giving the home side renewed impetus. However, the Dutch coped well defensivly and sealed a deserved victory as Georginio Wijnaldum made it 3-0 in stoppage time.

The defeat will come as further dissapointment for Brazil and their fans, following their 7-1 hammering against Germany in the semi-final.

Time is running out for Brazil to try and find a way back into this match. 15 minutes remain and they still trail the Netherlands 2-0 thanks to first half goals from Robin van Persie and Daley Blind.

Brazil are putting in a much improved performance in the second half, despite some wild challenges. However, Cillessen in the Dutch goal has had little to do and Louis van Gaal's side are still looking dangerous on the counter-attack and could quiet easily increase their lead.

The teams are out for the second half and are already underway. Scolari has made one change for Brazil, Fernandinho replacing Luiz Gustavo. Unsurprisingly, the Dutch have not made any substitutions.

Pleanty for Brazil head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari to ponder at half time, with his side trailing 2-0 against the Netherlands, thanks to a 2nd minute penalty by Robin van Persie, who notched up his fourth goal of the tournament and then from Daley Blind. A crescendo of boo's from the fans as the Brazil team departs for the dressing room.

Police in Rio de Janeiro confirmed that 19 people had been detained on Saturday, all of whom, have a history of committing vandalism during protests as Brazil tries to pre-empt any potential violent demonstrations during Sunday's World Cup final.

Protests across Brazil have petered out since the month-long soccer tournament started on June 12, but authorities are taking no chances now that online videos are encouraging violent fringe groups to return to the streets when Germany plays Argentina.

About 26,000 security forces will work during the final match that will be attended by several presidents, while 1,500 private security guards will work inside Rio's Maracana stadium, according to the Justice Ministry.

Brazil have had their best chance of the game so far as they look to try and haul back the 2-0 deficit they currently face. It came from a free-kick wide on the right, which was whipped into the penalty area. Luiz Gustavo got a slight touch, but David Luiz could not stretch far enough to turn the ball into the net at the far post.

Brazil are really struggling to make an impact on this game. The team look desperately short on confidence following their 7-1 hammering by Germany, while the home fans have already begun to show their discontent at the Selecao with whistles being heard around the stadium. Still 2-0 to Holland and it's the Dutch who look the more likely to add another.

Daley Blind has put the Netherlands 2-0 up against Brazil, with a well taken goal from close range. The home fans worst nightmare's just might be coming true with just 20 minutes gone.

The Netherlands are cutting Brazil open at will, with Arjen Robben doing more in the first 10 minutes of this match than he managed in 120 minutes against Argentina in the semi-final. The home side will need to get their act together in defense soon rather than later, or they will be in for a difficult evening. Holland still lead 1-0 following van Persie's penalty.

The Netherlands have made a fantastic start to the game, with Robin van Persie scoring from the penalty spot after just two minutes to put them 1-0 up against Brazil. Arjen Robben was hauled down on the edge of the penalty area, though the referee elected to award a spot kick.

Kick-off is less than 15 minutes away, but things have not started well for the Netherlands. Wesley Sneijder, who missed a spot-kick in the penalties defeat to Argentina in the semi-final has injured his hamstring in the warm-up. Jonathan De Guzman.

Neymar arrives at the stadium, though he won't be playing any part in the game, as he recovers from a broken vertebrae in his back, which he injured during Brazil's 2-1 quarter-final victory against Colombia.

The two sides have named their starting line-ups for the game.

Brazil: César, Maicon, Silva, Luiz, Maxwell, Gustavo, Paulinho, Ramires, Oscar, Willian, Jô. Subs: Jefferson, Victor, Dani Alves, Fernandinho, Marcelo, Hulk, Fred, Dante, Henrique, Hernanes, Bernard.

Holland: Cillessen; Kuyt, De Vrij, Vlaar, Martins Indi, Blind; Clasie, Wijnaldum, Sneijder; Robben, Van Persie. Subs: Vorm, Krul, Janmaat, De Guzman, Verhaegh, Veltman, Kongolo, Lens, Huntelaar, Memphis.

A picture of the stunning Estadio Nacional Mane Garrincha where they third-place play-off will take place. Just over an hour to go until kick-off between Brazil and the Netherlands. It is named after one of Brazil's best ever players, Garrincha, who helped his country win the World Cup in 1958. However, he lost his life in 1983 at the age of just 49.

However, don't expect a sea of Orange in the Estadio Nacional Mane Garrincha, as they are likely to be drowned out by an ocean of yellow, that is of course if Brazil's fans can forgive their side, following the 7-1 semi-final defeat against Germany.

Brazil head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has been spelling out the need for his country to restore pride after their humiliating 7-1 defeat in the semi-finals to Germany.

“I know my career will be marked by this defeat but we have an obligation to move on and think about the next goal," the 65 year-old commented, ahead of the third-place play-off against the Netherlands in Brasilia.

Such was the disgust at the loss, some Brazilian fans burnt their national flag, while others left the game against Germany after less than half an hour, after the home side were trailing 5-0.

Meanwhile captain Thiago Silva, who missed the defeat through suspension has called on the home fans to get behind their country. “This is a bad time so we need strength from our fans,” said the Paris Saint-Germain defender. “I guarantee that we will play this Saturday’s game like it was the final.”

There is little love lost between bitter South American rivals Brazil and Argentina. However, the Selecao's superstar playmaker, Neymar, who will not feature in the third-place play-off against the Netherlands after fracturing a vertebra in his spine, following his side's 2-1 quarter-final victory against Colombia, is giving the Blue and Whites his backing in the final on Sunday.

Lionel Messi and Neymar are both club mates at Spanish giants Barcelona. Despite winning everything there is to win in club football, Messi has yet to win a World Cup title.

The penultimate game of the 2014 World Cup gets underway in less than three hours’ time in a game no one really wants to play. Hosts Brazil, after their 7-1 humiliation against Germany face the Netherlands, who lost to Argentina on penalties, to decide who will finish in 3rd place. Brazil will try to restore some pride after yet again failing to win Football's biggest prize on home soil, while the Dutch will be looking to give head coach, Louis van Gaal the perfect send-off, before the 62 year-old steps down at the end of the tournament, to take over the reigns at Manchester United.

FIFA’s Appeal Committee has rejected the appeals lodged by both Luis Suarez and the Uruguayan Football Association, leaving a four-month ban against the player in place.

However, the relevant decision isn’t yet final and binding as the sides can still appeal to the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS).

Suarez was harshly sanctioned by FIFA after he bit Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini in the shoulder during a World Cup group stage encounter.

Despite the disqualification, the Uruguayan forward is currently on the verge of a £75 million move from Liverpool to Barcelona.

Argentina will be facing off Germany in the World Cup finals. The South American team eked out a victory in penalty kicks against Netherlands after extra time thanks to Sergio Romero. Germany and Argentina will face each other for the third time in the tournament's history. The nail biting conclusion came after a scoreless match with several missed opportunities by both teams.

Argentina and Netherlands players hold a moment of silence for former Real Madrid forward Alfredo Di Stefano before their 2014 World Cup semi-finals at the Corinthians arena in Sao Paulo.

Twenty buses parked at a garage in Sao Paulo were set ablaze overnight, though police could not conclusively determine that the vandalism was linked to outbursts following Brazil’s dramatic loss to Germany in the semi-finales.

Isolated disturbances were reported elsewhere in the country, including in Minas Gerais, where four people were removed from a stadium following a brawl in which 12 individuals were hurt. In Parana state some fifteen buses were reportedly set alight, while at least six people were detained in Rio de Janeiro for participating in street brawls. An additional smattering of disturbances were noted by police who intervened to defuse tensions at FIFA Fan Fest World Cup viewing events around the country, though fans largely took the sporting loss with low spirits rather than any violence.

Germany's Andre Schuerrle has compounded Brazil's loss by scoring two additional goals in the second half. The South American crowd in the stadium looks despondent.

Brazilian football fans angry with the humiliating score in the match with Germany have burned the national flag, according to Veja Sao Paulo.

Brazilian supporters will be wearing Neymar masks as their team takes on Germany in the World Cup semi-final match later on Tuesday.

The Brazilian hero’s run at the home World Cup ended after he fractured a vertebra in his spine during a quarter-final match against Colombia.

Neymar has said he will support Brazil from the stands during their encounter with Germany at the Mineirao arena in Belo Horizont.

The chief executive of a FIFA partner company was arrested by Brazilian police investigating the illegal sale of World Cup 2014 tickets, British media report.

Head of Match Hospitality, Ray Whelan, was detained at Copacabana Palace Hotel in Rio de Janeiro where FIFA’s top officials are also staying during the event.

Whelan, who used to be an agent for English football’s legend Sir Bobby Charlton, was released after questioning.

The investigators believe an international gang has been selling tickets on the black market for the last four World Cups, earning over $90 million per tournament.

The World Cup in Brazil has become the second most attended competition ever, FIFA announced. The average gate stands at 52,762, meaning Brazil overtakes Germany 2006 which now moves to third with 52,491 visitors per game. The record average attendance was set in the United States in 1994 at 68,991.

Brazil so far after 60 matches attracted 3,165,693 fans to the stands, an average of 98.3 percent capacity across the tournament. "We think that record will stay for quite some time due to the huge capacity of the stadiums in the US," FIFA spokeswoman Delia Fischer told the daily briefing.

Argentina's Angel Di Maria has been ruled out of the World Cup semi-final against the Netherlands after suffering a thigh injury in the quarterfinal win over Belgium.

Netherlands coach Louis Van Gaal has called the World Cup in Brazil the best tournament in 30 years, during his press conference ahead of his team’s match against Costa Rica in Salvador in north-eastern Brazil.

Van Gaal, who is taking control of Manchester United after the tournament, said that Costa Rica’s style of play was similar to previous vanquished Latin American teams Mexico and Chile, but said that the Oranje would not be underestimating the surprise package of the tournament in the Quarter-Final clash.

Germany are through to the Semi-Final of the World Cup, after beating France with an early header from defender Mats Hummels. Enjoying a narrow advantage throughout, Joachim Low’s side held onto the win despite an extra-time chance for France striker Karim Benzema, who was denied by the superlative Manuel Neuer.

The Bundesmannschaft will now go on to play the winner of the match between Brazil and Colombia later on this evening.

From now on, Ghana’s footballers will be made to sign contracts when they are called up to the country’s national football team, GhanaWeb reports.

According to Kwesi Nyantakyi, president of the Ghana Football Association, the contracts will deal with bonuses, appearance fees and general conduct on national team duty.

“We wish to state that the World Cup in Brazil has taught us bitter lessons,”
Nyantakyi said. “We must continue to emphasize discipline as the hallmark of our team and management will continue to help the coach to instill discipline in the team.”

During the World Cup, Ghana’s players threatened to boycott their decisive match against Portugal, demanding bigger bonuses than previously agreed, to be paid in cash.

Seven German players have shown symptoms of colds ahead of the World Cup quarterfinals against France on Friday.

Dutch football star Arjen Robben says a tough challenge awaits his team in the quarterfinals against the World Cup’s biggest sensation, Costa Rica.

“I think they're a very strong team,” Robben told FIFA’s official website. “We have to stay focused. Costa Rica have a very good team, they have already proved that in their group, which was very tough, with Italy, England and Uruguay in there. They've been really impressive and we'll have to prepare very well if we're going to beat them.”

Brazilian football legend, Zico, who is writing for the Guardian during the World Cup, has picked his World Cup 2014 team of the tournament so far:

Goalkeeper: Guillermo Ochoa (Mexico);
Defenders:
Mauricio Isla (Chile), Mario Yepes (Colombia), David Luiz (Brazil);
Midfielders:
Bryan Ruiz (Costa Rica), Luiz Gustavo (Brazil), James Rodríguez (Colombia), Daley Blind (Netherlands);

An official White House petition was started on Tuesday to rename Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport after US football goalkeeper Tim Howard, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Although the Americans were defeated by Belgium 2- 1 in the first knockout round, Howard put up a record-breaking performance with 16 saves.

The petition needs to get 100,000 signatures in a month’s time in order to be officially considered by the US authorities.

Algerian fans plan to collect 1 million signatures in order to persuade country’s football bosses to sign a new contract with national team coach Vahid Halilhodzic.

The Facebook page to support the action was quick to bring together over 80,000 followers.

Despite Algeria progressing to the World Cup knockout stages for the first time ever under Halilhodzic, the country’s football federation decided not to prolong its contract with the Bosnian coach.

Ivory Coast captain Yaya Toure has accused the football authorities of turning a blind eye to injustice towards African teams.

He blamed his national team’s disappointing display at the World Cup on biased refereeing, saying that the penalty which saw Ivory Coast losing the battle for playoff spot to Greece (1-2), was awarded wrongfully (1-2).

“Before that, in a match against Japan (2-1) we were deprived of two well-deserved penalties,”
Toure told France Football.

“But, of course, nobody cares about that as we’re talking about an African team. Nobody cares about injustice towards an African team,” he stressed.

Belgium defeated the US 2-1 in 121 minutes to advance to the quarterfinals against Argentina on Saturday. The Red Devils had 38 shots on goal to the Yanks’ 13 during the elimination game. American keeper Tim Howard had 16 saves, the most by a World Cup goalkeeper since 1966. The game was a scoreless draw until extra time. Kevin De Bruyne scored at 93 minutes, followed by Romelu Lukaku at 105, putting the game seemingly out of reach for the Stars and Stripes. US sub Julian Green, at age 19, scored at minute 107, and the American offense stepped up their game, increasing the pressure on the Red Devils until the very end.

“It’s heartbreaking. I don’t think we could have given it any more. We got beat by a good team.” Howard told ESPN after the game. “It hurts.”

“The dream falls short, but it’s an incredible group. I’ll never forget this night,” he added.

France progress to the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup after a hard-fought 2-0 win against Nigeria.

It took until the 79th minute before the French team managed to crack the Nigerian defense and Paul Pogba capitalized on the keeper’s mistake to put in a header, 1-0.

The score doubled after a stoppage time header, with Nigeria’s Joseph Yobo sending the ball into his own net, 2-0.

Germany take on Algeria later on the night to determine France’s next opponent.

Uruguayan forward, Luis Suarez, has publicly apologized for biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini during a Word Cup match, adding that he’ll never do anything of the kind again.

"Independent from the fallout and the contradicting declarations that have surfaced during these past days, all of which have been without the intention of interfering with the good performance of my national team, the truth is that my colleague Giorgio Chiellini suffered the physical result of a bite in the collision he suffered with me,”
Suarez said in a statement on his official website.

"For this: 1. I deeply regret what occurred. 2. I apologize to Giorgio Chiellini and the entire football family. 3. I vow to the public that there will never again be another incident like this involving me,"
he added.

The Uruguayan international was handed a record ban from FIFA for his misconduct last week, which will see him missing nine matches for his country and 13 games for Liverpool in the English Premier League.

Football’s governing body, FIFA, have slapped a fine of 50,000 Swiss francs on Algeria for the misconduct of its fans during a World Cup group match against Russia (1-1), the Algerian Football Federation’s website reports.

A laser pointer was shone from the Algerian stands into the face of Russian goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev a second before he conceded a goal, which shattered Russia’s World cup dreams and sent the African team to the playoffs.

FC Barcelona is willing to sign contract with Luis Suarez this summer, but insists on an anti-biting clause in it. Suarez was handed a four-month ban by FIFA after being found guilty of biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini while playing for Uruguay at the World Cup in Brazil.

Holland defeated Mexico 2-1 in a remarkable comeback. Last minute goals from Klaas-jan Huntelaar and Wesley Sneijder sent them through to the quarterfinals.

Mexico looked set to go through after a 48th minute goal, and goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa gave a spirited defense. But the Dutch scored an equalizer in the 88th minute, and then in the fourth minute of extra time, Huntelaar sneaked the winning shot past Ochoa.

Violence broke out as police confronted an anti-FIFA protest in the Tijuca area of Rio de Janeiro on Saturday. The clashes erupted as Uruguay played against Colombia at nearby Maracana Stadium.

The Twitter account of Brazil's federal police was hacked into on Saturday and a message was posted warning of a bomb threat at Mineirao Stadium in the southeastern city of Belo Horizonte, which was hosting the Brazil-Chile World Cup game.

The fake tweet said: "The bomb threat at Mineirao was confirmed, the evacuation of the venue is not ruled out.” The message was posted shortly before the game.

"The [Twitter] account of the Federal Police was hacked," the agency said in a statement. "The information about a bomb scare at Mineirao Stadium on Saturday afternoon during the Brazil-Chile game was false," it added.

Tabarez said Suarez was made a "scapegoat" for biting an opponent at the World Cup, adding that the punishment came with "excessive severity.”

"Many times you forget that the scapegoat is a person, who has rights," Tabarez said during a press conference on Friday. "In this specific case of Luis Suarez, despite the faults he may have committed, he has made significant contributions to football from the pitch.”

One hundred and sixty-seven clients of a betting firm have made money after Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez bit an Italian defender in his team’s last group stage encounter on Tuesday, Brazilian media report.

The incident occurred in the ending of the match, with Giorgio Chiellini suffering from Suarez’s teeth.

A representative for the bookies said that the maximum gain from the bite of the Uruguayan striker was $3,300.

Football’s governing body plans to investigate Suarez’s behavior. He previously assaulted his opponents in the same manner on two occasions.

FIFA said it has opened a disciplinary probe against Luis Suarez of Uruguay for allegedly biting an Italian opponent during a World Cup game on Tuesday.

Uruguay won the game 1-0 but it was overshadowed by the incident involving Suarez and Italy's Giorgio Chiellini.

Suarez has already banned twice before in his career for biting opponents.

The latest incident happened moments before a teammate scored the winner for Uruguay, who now advance to the next round of the tournament.

FIFA rules mean that Suarez, who plays his club football in England with Liverpool, runs the risk of a heavy punishment that could bar him from the rest of the World Cup in Brazil, just as Uruguay emerged from the group phase and reached the round of 16. (AFP)

It's been a brilliant first 45 minutes for the Algerians who are now leading 3-0 against South Korea.

Belgium have collected their second win at the World Cup in Brazil, topping Russia with a narrow 1-0 score.

The Belgians managed to save more strength for the end of the match at the Maracana stadium in Rio.

On the 84th minute, the Russian team were only saved by the post after a free-kick from Kevin Mirallas.

But four minutes later, substitute Divok Origi left Russia no chance by capitalizing on a clever assist from Eden Hazard, 1-0.
Belgium have guaranteed themselves a place in the playoffs with 6 points after two games, while Russia remain with just 1 point in the bag.

Two other Group H participants – South Korea and Algeria – will play each other in less than two hours.

FIFA’s decision to stage Group B matches ahead of Group A fixtures lends a helping hand to World Cup hosts Brazil, Louis van Gaal, the Dutch coach, said.

The decision means that the Netherlands side will play their final Group B fixture before finding out their potential opponents in the round of 16.

"FIFA, for every match, has all their commercials and clips about fair play. But the way they play these tricks and schedule Brazil matches like this is not fair play anymore," Van Gaal is cited by Goal.com.

"We're going to focus on a victory against Chile. I don't think that will be affected because Brazil play after us. We just expect they'll do their sporting duty," he added.

No goals were scored in the opening 45 minutes in the Group H clash between Belgium and Russia at the Maracana stadium in Rio.

Aleksandr Kokorin came close to giving Russia the lead at the end of the half, but a close-range header from the unmarked striker went wide.

The coach of the World Cup’s biggest sensation, Costa Rica, says he’s not at all concerned about the extra attention paid by the anti-doping authorities toward his team.

Following a 1-0 win over Italy on Friday, which won Costa Rica a place in the playoffs, seven of the team’s players and two Italians were ordered to undergo doping tests.

“They could’ve invited the whole team, its coach and doctor to pass the test,” Jorge Luis Pinto, Costa Rica manager, told Globoesporte website. “We’re calm. It’s not a problem for us. But I hope that the other national teams will experience the same treatment. We just keep working hard. If the others can’t work – it’s their problem. Our team is ready to run and play confident football throughout the whole match.”

With just over an hour to go before Russia’s crucial clash with Belgium, hundreds of Russian fans are taking part in a march in Rio’s Copacabana neighborhood, Sport-Express reports.

The supporters at the head of the group are carrying a banner, which says: “World Cup final. July 13. Russia vs Brazil.”

The fans appear to be in a peaceful mood, with the march being overseen by military police. No incidents have been reported.

English Striker Wayne Rooney has apologized to his country for the teams less than stellar World Cup outing, which saw the squad eliminated at the group stage for the first time since 1958.

“The fans have been incredible to us, flying all this way and giving us the support they have. Back home there were kids staying up late and watching the games. Out here, the fans have been amazing,” he said.

“We’ve given everything. We’ve dedicated our lives to this tournament and unfortunately we haven’t succeeded. We appreciate everything they’ve done for us. Hopefully, one day soon, we’ll give them something to smile about.”

Rooney, however, also said that perhaps England was too honest in a sport which is increasingly dominated by theatrical diving and dirty play.

“In terms of Uruguay the other night, they stopped the game, they committed I don’t know how many fouls ... clever fouls, really, to slow the game down,” he said.

“You see players surrounding the referees — I’m not saying Uruguay did that — but I’m the same now. I want to win the game. I got kicked 10 times and I don’t think there was a yellow card given to an opponent.

We try and be honest, but maybe that’s a fault of ours. But we gave everything to try and win. It hasn’t happened. It’s tough ... we have to stay strong and try and improve.”

Remembering England's tradition of World Cup excellence.

A massive sink hole has opened up near the stadium which is set to host Italy v Uruguay. Cars, furniture and other household items could be seem falling down into the massive pit which opened up in Natal, the capital and largest city of Rio Grande do Norte, a northeastern state in Brazil. The area has been hit with torrential downfalls, which have already sparked evacuations in the area. Many homes can be seen teetering on the edge of the hole, which continues to expand. The hole is four miles (6.5km) from the Arena das Dunas stadium, which will host the Group D match between Italy and Uruguay on Tuesday.

Miroslav Klose's is head over heels following his equalizer for Germany in their 2-2 draw with Ghana.

"I don't know how long it's been since I did a somersault. But at least it worked out," the German striker said after the match.

The goal brought him neck and neck with Ronaldo's record of 15 World Cup goals and inspired words of encouragement from the Brazilian legend.

“I pray with all my powers that he does not break the record,” said Ronaldo.

A Brazilian court ordered FIFA to introduce mandatory water breaks for players in World Cup matches if temperatures reach 32 degrees Celsius (89.6 Fahrenheit).

A street demonstration in Brazil's biggest city ended in violence on Thursday as anti-government protesters vandalized cars and banks and police responded with tear gas.

The protest turned violent just as a World Cup game between England and Uruguay was ending roughly 15 miles (25 km) away on the other side of Sao Paulo. There were no initial reports of injured protesters, a police spokeswoman said, or of foreign soccer fans getting caught up in the violence.

The march started off peacefully as roughly 1,300 people commemorated the one-year anniversary of successful efforts to prevent a transit fare hike. Later, some protesters began breaking storefront windows and setting fires.

Television images showed groups of masked men spray painting graffiti on cars, firing off rockets and smashing public property as police responded with tear gas. (Reuters)

Despite Greece playing a man down for the majority of the match and Japanese domination of time of possession (68 percent to 32 percent) and outshooting the Greeks 11 to 5, the Pirate Ship managed to eke out a draw against the Blue Samurai.

As a result, undefeated Colombia advances to the Round of 16, and Greece’s hopes remain alive with a -1 goal differential, while Japan is likely to be eliminated with a -3 goal differential. Greece will play Ivory Coast on Tuesday. If Greece wins, the second team to advance out of Group C could come down to the number of goals scored.

Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo could risk tearing his patellar tendon beyond repair, NBC Sports reported. Dr. Jose Carlos Noronha, a top-level orthopedic surgeon, is reportedly telling the 29-year-old not to play in the match against the United States on Sunday. If the Stars and Stripes beat Portugal, the perennial contenders would be eliminated from the World Cup.

According to El Confidential, Dr. Noronha told Ronaldo, “Let your knee rest, or your future is in danger” to which Ronaldo replied, “I’m the one that says whether I’m playing or not.”

Police fired rubber bullets and arrested 11 people Monday to break up anti-World Cup protesters who trashed banks and blocked traffic in the southeast Brazilian host city of Curitiba.

About 200 protesters gathered in the city center and marched toward the stadium where Iran played Nigeria in a World Cup match, but were blocked by police, news website G1 reported.

The protesters stopped a bus carrying fans to the stadium and blocked off several streets, setting garbage on fire to prevent cars from getting through, G1 said. (AFP)

The US has beat Ghana 2-1, gaining a huge three points in the so-called “Group of Death.” The Stars and Stripes joins Germany atop the standings in Group G, after rallying to beat the Black Stars, who had tied the score late in the game. The US had previously been eliminated from World Cup contention by Ghana in the last two World Cups.

16 June 2014

The referees announced five minutes of stoppage time will be added on to the end of the USA-Ghana game. The Black Stars’ Sulley Muntari receives a yellow card one-and-a-half minutes into extra time.

Team USA retakes the lead at 85:50, with a header by John Brooks from 7 or 8 yards out. It is the first goal in World Cup history scored by a United States substitute. He is also the first US man to score in his World Cup debut since 2002.

Ghana ties the game up at 81:55 with a goal by Andre Dede Ayew. The Black Stars are out-possessing the USA 59-41 percent as the Yanks could no longer hold off what ESPN called “a ferocious Ghana attack.”

After halftime, momentum has swung towards Ghana, as they have had six near-goals within ten minutes, and the Black Stars have kept the pressure on the Stars and Stripes’ tenuous one-goal lead.

Clint Dempsey, who scored the USA goal, is back in the game, despite a bloody nose. Dempsey was kicked in the face while trying to head the ball. Meanwhile, teammate Jozy Altidore remains out of the game with a strained hamstring.

The US has shocked the crowd by scoring its fastest World Cup goal in history, within the first minute of play. That performance now sets a high bar for the remainder of the first half.

The US now faces Ghana, the closest thing the American team has to a nemesis after the African team bounced it out of World Cup contention in the last two go-rounds, in 2006 and in 2010. The Americans’ poor luck vs. Ghana has held despite a significant gap in rankings -- the US is rated 13th in the world, while Ghana is 37th. Seven Ghanaian players from 2010 are back, including Asamoah Gyan, the team captain.

Final whistle: Germany 4 - 0 Portugal. Germany's final goal was a hat trick for Muller.

Portugal's captain, Cristiano Ronaldo, took a good shot at the goal off a free kick in extra time, but Germany's goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, met it with an equally fine save,

Germany are up 3 - 0 against Portugal at half time, with Thomas Muller scoring the first goal on a penalty, and a second shortly before the whistle was blown. The second goal was scored by German defender Mats Hummels.

Portugal's Pepe was sent off towards the end of the second half after he took down Muller, who had arguably overreacted to the knock. While the initial incident probably wasn't red-card material, Pepe bowed his head towards Muller while he was on the floor, in an altercation that was widely regarded as a headbutt.

Argentina has beaten Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-1 in Group F game.

Around 150 anti-FIFA World Cup demonstrators were stopped by police as they were trying to make their way to Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, Reuters reported. The protesters were carrying signs reading, "FIFA go home.” Some stores and one metro station were temporarily closed as the demonstrators approached. Police on horseback blocked the protesters from going further, with some resorting to gas canisters and pepper spray, according to local television station Globo News.

France eased past Honduras with a 3-0 win on Sunday afternoon. Two of the goals were scored by Karim Benzema. This is the first FIFA match won by the French in eight years.

At least 18 anti-World Cup protesters were arrested on Saturday, and police used pepper spray to break up an unruly group of Argentine fans in Rio de Janeiro, AFP reports.

At one protest in Belo Horizonte, the southeastern city that hosted Saturday’s match between Colombia and Greece, 15 people were arrested after 200 people attempted to march to the city’s host stadium. Police said those arrested were carrying Molotov cocktails, knives, masks, and bottles of vinegar, which are believed to alleviate the effects of tear gas.

Another three people were arrested when 100 protesters approached the stadium in the northeastern city of Fortaleza, where Costa Rica were playing Uruguay.

Meanwhile, 1,500 Argentina fans letting lose in Rio de Janeiro got out of control, blocking traffic near Copacabana beach. Police used pepper spray to disperse revelers who had gathered on beachside thoroughfare Atlantic Avenue. No arrests or injuries were reported.

Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger was reportedly airlifted to hospital on Saturday to get his knee scanned, which was previously injured during training camp last month. However, there are apparently no concerns that he will miss out on Germany’s match against Portugal on Monday. After the scan, the 29-year-old travelled to Salvador with the rest of the Germany team, where their next game will be played. In 2013, Schweinsteiger was voted German player of the year, and his absence from the pitch would likely be a sizable setback for the German squad.

Police in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso are investigating the alleged attempted rape of a female US citizen on Friday night in the central city of Cuiaba, which hosted the World Cup match between Australia and Chile, Reuter reports.

The 24-year-old woman and her boyfriend were staying in the home of someone they met during Friday's World Cup celebrations. She reportedly woke up screaming with a man on top of her, according to a police statement. A medical exam later determined that rape had not actually been committed and police were waiting on additional tests.

A US Embassy spokeswoman in Brasilia said the embassy was aware of reports of the case but could not comment due to privacy laws.

Cuiaba, not generally known as a tourist hotspot, will host three more games, including Russia’s match against South Korea on June 21. Nigeria and Bosnia will also play on June 21, while Japan and Colombia are set to do battle in the city on June 24.

Seems playing away from home is par for the course for most World Cup players, though Russians and Brits tend to stick to home team squads.

Prior to England’s losing effort against Italy, police urged fans to remember “it’s just a game.” Police have noted a direct correlation between instances of domestic violence and national team play.

Detective Superintendent Ewen Wilson from Essex Police said there would be heightened patrols in the county’s cities during England matches, to ensure the tournament doesn’t become “an excuse for violence or disorder,” Metro cites him as saying.

Almost 6,000 calls were made to Essex police on the day England were knocked out of the 2010 tournament – a 43 percent increase over the average number for a typical Sunday in June.

“I hope everyone enjoys the World Cup but experience tells us we need to plan for the minority who spoil things,” Superintendent Wilson added.

Chile vs Australia. Chile is expected to be one of the most exciting teams of the World Cup and could very well overwhelm Australia with quick, percussive passing – for which the Latin countries are so revered.

Australia on the other hand is not looking good, and has gone backwards in recent years. Fans are predicting the worst for the young squad short of experience. Putting faith in their new players is the key to future success, even if that means a few defeats for what is the lowest ranked team in the World Cup.

Netherlands beats Spain 5-1 on the second day of the FIFA World Cup.

FIFA will analyze the controversial penalty decision in Brazil’s opening World Cup win over Croatia, the head of FIFA’s refereeing department, Massimo Busacca, has said. Busacca, however, stopped short of criticizing the decision of Japanese referee Yuichi Nishimura. Nishimura “had a very good position” to make the call, Busacca said. Responding to reporters’ questions, he added that “there is not one human in life that is not committing a mistake.”

It is Spain versus the Netherlands now. The Dutch team will be looking for revenge after a humiliating defeat in South Africa in 2010. This time they can count on plenty of emerging talent who could make an impact if granted enough time.

This is the first time in the history of the World Cup where finalists from the previous tournament are meeting in their first game. But Spain is as strong as ever this year. Although the team is only in number four position with the bookies, the defending world champions could make that ranking look a bit silly.

FIFA has provisionally banned former executive committee member and German World Cup winner and coach Franz Beckenbauer from all footballing activities for 90 days. The penalty was imposed for Beckenbauer’s “failing to co-operate” with the investigation into the committee’s 2010 voting, which resulted in Qatar being picked for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The voting has been mired by a corruption scandal since an alleged bribing of more than US$5 million by Qatar’s football administrator Mohammed bin Hammam was exposed by British media. The 68-year-old Beckenbauer allegedly refused to cooperate with FIFA’s Ethics Committee on the grounds that he no longer takes any active part in football activities.

Mexico vs Cameroon match kicks off! It is the second in group A.

While Mexico has a good history of qualifying for the World Cup and have twice reached the semi-finals. This year’s team is not the best and only just scraped into Brazil, with recent performances not creating much excitement. Sports pundits are ruling out even two goals from Mexico

Cameroon who have pulled off some impressive victories in the past are not world beaters either but might well create the opportunity for a win at the Arena das Dunas stadium in Natal. They reached the quarter finals against England in 1990.

The World Cup gets into the swing of things on Friday with three important games in which the outcome is far from certain: Mexico vs Cameroon at 4 p.m. GMT, Spain vs the Netherlands at 7 p.m. GMT, and Chile vs Australia at 10 p.m. GMT.

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff has spoken out against critics who have attacked the government for what they perceive as overspending on the World Cup.

“There are people who claim the resources for the World Cup should have been directed to healthcare and education,” said the president in a statement, stressing that while she respected these opinions she could not agree with them.

She maintains that from 2010 – when construction on the World Cup stadiums started – to 2013, the government invested around $762 billion in education and healthcare, 212 times more than the money spent on stadiums.

“The World Cup is not just about spending, it also brings income to the country. It injects billions into businesses and creates jobs,” Rousseff tweeted.

The walk-out began last week as workers demanded a pay raise - with the union asking for a 12.2 per cent increase, while the government is agreeing to only 8.7 per cent.

The transport union is demanding a 12.2 percent salary increase, with the company running the network offering only 8.8 percent.

A court order issued at the weekend instructing workers to return to their posts has been defied by the organizers, who say that they will continue gathering until their demands are met.
