Former England and Man United striker Wayne Rooney has been charged with drink driving after being arrested at 2am following a night out with friends.
Rooney was arrested in the small hours of Friday morning after being pulled over by police while driving a black Volkswagen Beetle.
The 31-year-old was quizzed by cops and then arrested on suspicion of drink driving and spent the night in police custody.
He was later charged with driving whilst over the prescribed limit.
Rooney has been released on bail and is due to appear in court charged with the offence in September.
The striker, now plying his trade with boyhood club Everton, had been returning from spending Thursday evening with friends at a bar in Alderley Edge, North West England, near to his £6 million ($7.7 million) mansion in Prestbury.
“The man was arrested shortly after 2am today, Friday 1 September, after officers stopped a black VW Beetle on Altrincham Road, Wilmslow (North West England)," a statement from Cheshire Police read, the Manchester Evening News reports.
“Wayne Rooney, aged 31, of Prestbury, has since been charged with driving whilst over the prescribed limit.
“Rooney has been released on bail and is due to appear at Stockport Magistrates’ Court in September.”
It is understood that hours before the arrest, Rooney had trained at Everton’s Finch Farm, ahead of a gap in Premier League fixtures due to the international break.
Rooney lives at the property in Prestbury, around 15 miles from Manchester, with wife Coleen and their three children, Kai, Klay and Kit. The couple revealed on Instagram on August 18 that they were expecting their fourth child.
Last week, Rooney also announced he would retire from international football, calling time on an England career that saw him become all-time top scorer for his country.
In 119 appearances for the Three Lions, Rooney scored 53 goals, two ahead of legendary World Cup winner Sir Bobby Charlton. He also captained the side from 2014 until his retirement.
The player moved from Manchester United, where he was also all-time leading scorer and captain, to rejoin his boyhood club Everton, from where he joined United as an 18-year-old in 2004.
He celebrated 200 Premier League goals by scoring against Manchester City for Everton in a 1-1 draw on August 21.
