US president Donald Trump has paid tribute to the French national team who claimed the World Cup trophy, beating Croatia 4-2 in the gold medal match at Luzhniki stadium in Moscow.
The US head of state also praised Russia for staging “a truly great” tournament, which was also hailed as the “best ever” by the FIFA chief Gianni Infantino.
“Congratulations to France, who played extraordinary soccer, on winning the 2018 World Cup. Additionally, congratulations to President Putin and Russia for putting on a truly great World Cup Tournament -- one of the best ever!”, Trump tweeted, minutes after the final whistle marked France’s win at the packed-to-the-rafters Luzhniki stadium.
The USA will host the 2026 World Cup along with Canada and Mexico after their joint bid was awarded the right to stage the global football tournament at the 68th FIFA Congress in Moscow.
