Nationwide anti-Trump protests rock the US

Thousands across major US cities have been protesting the election of Donald Trump as the 45th US president. Demonstrators reportedly burned flags and smashed store windows. Dozens of arrests have been made following the rallies.

Hundreds of students in East Los Angeles left classes at lunchtime to protest the election of Donald Trump as president of the United States.


They headed for Mariachi Square and City Hall.

In particular they were fighting his call for deportation of undocumented immigrants.
“I can make my parents proud if they are not here,” 10th grader Yesenia told the Los Angeles Times.

A long row of police blocked the entrance the Freeway.

Thousands of Portland High school and middle school students swarmed the Lloyd Center shopping mall chanting loudly.


“This is the coolest thing I have ever seen,” said one student off camera, as one store brings down their shutter.

Portland Police Department tweeted that student protest was affecting traffic and asked parents to “encourage their children to go back to school.”

Later police said “Officers working to direct student protest” acknowledging that students were talking about getting on a freeway or blocking traffic on Steel Bridge.

Middle school and high school students were out protesting Donald Trump’s election to president for the sixth day straight.

Hundreds of High School students in Portland, Oregon joined the frey on Monday, walking out of class and convening in Pioneer Square, and visiting City Hall, yelling “Not my president.”

“We are here to tell the adults and the people who actually voted in this election that Portland schools does not stand for racism, we do not stand for sexism and Islamophobia,” said a sophomore from Cleveland High School, according to the Oregonian.

Several hundred students rallied to march over Hawthorne Bridge undeterred by the lone police man trying to stop them.

Students from several Los Angeles, California schools also marched against Trump on Monday. The protest included students from Garfield, Mendez, Roosevelt, Esteban Torres, Wilson and Lincoln high schools, organizers said.

On Monday morning, students at Mongtomery Blair High School in the Washington suburb of Silver Spring, Maryland staged a walkout protesting Trump.

A group of protesters is reportedly blocking traffic by holding hands in a circle at the Pine/Boren intersection in Seattle, Washington.

At least 19 people have been arrested during anti-Trump protests in Portland, police wrote on Twitter.

Police have deployed flashbang grenades against protesters in Portland, the Oregonian newspaper reported.

The Oregonian estimated the crowd of protesters at 250 in Portland’s Pioneer Courthouse Square, adding that the crowd is much smaller than in previous nights.

Portland police wrote on Twitter that they have made several arrests SW Yamhill Street.

Portland protesters did not give up on attempts to block the tram tracks and brought “large metal barricades,” according to the police. They are reportedly using police barriers that they broke apart.

Protesters in Portland tried to erect “a barricade” across the Max train tracks, according to authorities. Police said they fired a couple of flashbang grenades to distract the crowd and promptly arrest the perpetrators.

Portland transport company TriMet closed a number of Max train platforms in the center of the city “for safety reasons.” Police have promised to clear the sidewalk to ensure un-disrupted train movement.

A group of protesters in Portland temporarily blocked the Max train, but “ran away” when police officers approached. One person was arrested at the scene, according to authorities.

Seven people have been arrested in Indianapolis so far, according to the police chief, who claimed that at least four of the “instigators” weren't local and apparently arrived in town to “disrupt the gathering.”

Portland police said that they arrested two suspects who had been throwing bottles and rocks at the officers.

A number of protesters in Indianapolis brought rocks with them and seven “instigators” arrested, the IMPD chief told journalists.

Some 8,000 people protested in downtown Los Angeles Saturday, according to LAPD.

The video, showing “one million protesters” turned out to be an old video from Venezuelan protests against Maduro.

An anti-Trump protest march in Indianapolis, Indiana, has reportedly erupted in skirmishes with police. According to an RTV6 journalist covering the event, protesters threw bottles and rocks at police, which resulted in several arrests.

About 100,000 indicated their intention to join rallies against Donald Trump in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles on Facebook, Reuters reported. In New York, the demonstrators once again marched through Fifth Avenue to Trump Tower.

With only a few hours' break, protests have resumed this morning in several big cities across the US, particularly in New York (which you can follow on our live feed here) and in Chicago:

At least 13 large metropolitan centers in the country have witnessed notable demonstrations against the man who beat Hillary Clinton earlier this week.

About 150 protesters were detained buses during protests against Donald Trump's election in Grand Park in Los Angeles early on Saturday, the LA Times has reported. The demonstration drew about 3,000 citizens, chanting "Not my President!" and was mostly peaceful, until a small section of demonstrators began to pelt police with stones, and vandalize property. LAPD labeled the gathering a “violent congregation” and began to take "proactive" measures to break up the demonstration.

Portland police describe a possible suspect in the shooting “as African-American male, late teens, 5'8", thin, wearing black dark hoodie and saggy blue jeans.”

One man has been injured during a shooting incident on Morrison Bridge in Portland, police wrote on Twitter. Reports on social media suggest that the victim was a protester who was shot by a group of individuals in a car.

According to the Oregonian newspaper, police are currently looking for the suspect's vehicle.

Protesters have gathered in Washington Square Park and by Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue in New York, where the Republican president-elect lives, chanting anti-Trump slogans.

Protesters in Portland have been involved in conflict with local police near Wells Fargo Tower, the Oregonian newspaper reported.

Police have deployed tear gas against anti-Trump protesters in Portland, Oregon, local witnesses wrote on social media. Portland police earlier wrote on Twitter that they would use tear gas if protesters do not stop throwing projectiles at officers.

Protesters started moving into the streets Friday morning, among them students who were demonstrating at the University of Rochester.

About 4,000 people demonstrated in Portland, Oregon Thursday night, for a second night of protest, before police declared it a riot and made 26 arrests.

Protesters in the city center could be heard chanting "We reject the president-elect!"

They argued a Trump presidency would create deep divisions along racial and gender lines.

Some smashed shop and car window, threw firecrackers and set trash alight.

Police on Twitter wrote that protesters were preparing “gas and flares” and were “arming themselves with rocks from construction site.”

When objects were thrown at police they responded with pepper spray and rubber bullets.

Oregon voted were in favor of Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in the election

Weighing in on the protests, president-elect Donald Trump described the reaction to his election as "very unfair."

On Friday morning, however, he tweeted praise for "small groups of protesters" with "passion for our great country."

Rallies are reported to have taken place in Minneapolis, according to Minnesota Public Radio (MPR).

The protesters shouted “Refugees are welcome here” and held placards reading “Not my president” and “Love trumps hate.”

"It actually feels nice knowing that people are standing up for us and knowing that we're welcome here. So it feels really nice knowing that American people are standing up with us,” Abdi Rahman,22, told MPR.

At least 26 people have been arrested during anti-Trump protests in Portland, Oregon, police say, adding that officers deployed pepper spray as well as “rubber ball distraction devices” to disperse the rally.

Portland police said on Twitter they have used “non-lethal weapons” to start moving the crowd. Earlier, the officers were attempting to disperse the crowd while demonstrators continued to throw various objects at police.

After several orders to disperse, police have used less lethal munitions to effect arrests and move the crowd. Officers still taking projectiles,” police tweeted.

Photos on social media show plumes of smoke in the air. Witnesses report loud bangs on Twitter.

Portland police called the anti-Trump demonstration “a riot,” citing its “extensive criminal and dangerous behavior,” The Oregonian newspaper reported.

At least 19 cars at Toyota of Portland were vandalized, a sales manager told the paper.

Donald Trump responded to the protests by claiming that the once “rigged election” had been a “very open and successful presidential election,” adding that the media was to blame for the “professional protesters.” He called it “very unfair!

President Barack Obama reminded protesters that "we're Americans and patriots" before Democrats and Republicans during his meeting with President-elect Donald Trump on at the White House on Thursday.

It’s a message that White House press secretary Josh Earnest expanded on later in the afternoon.

"It's important for us to remember, a day or two after the election, that we're Democrats and Republicans, but we're Americans and patriots first," Earnest told reporters. "And that's the message the president hopes that most people will hear."

A man has been arrested for his protest in Washington, DC outside where President-elect Donald Trump and Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin) are having lunch.

Trump adviser and former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani called the protesters “a bunch of spoiled crybabies,” and the entitled “1 percent of 1 percent of 1 percent.”

“You’ll be living in a better country” thanks to a Trump administration, Giuliani said Thursday morning, appearing on Fox News Channel show 'Fox & Friends'. “If not, go cry then.”

Protesters took to the streets shouting "Don't give in to racist fear, Muslims are welcome here!"

Hundreds of protesters chanting “No Trump. No KKK. No fascist USA” have gathered in and around Monroe Park in Richmond, local media reported.

Hundreds have been marching along Market Avenue in San Francisco, joining in a vigil in the Castro District, a predominantly gay neighborhood, in response to Trump’s presidential victory, AP reports.

Around 700 protesters have gathered in Philadelphia’s City Hall, causing traffic delays, police said, as cited by CBS. Some activists burned the American flag. According to CBS, the protesters were mostly supporters of Bernie Sanders.

At least two police officers have been injured in Oakland and two police cars were damaged, CNN reported, citing the local police department.

Some 13 people have been arrested in downtown Los Angeles following protests, CBS reported, citing the LAPD.

The rally in Los Angeles drew over 5,000 people, the majority of them high school and college students, according to reports on local media.

One of the organizers of the anti-Trump rally in Washington, Ben Wikler, said that people are gathering because they “are justly frightened.”

“We are here because in these darkest moments, we are not alone,” he added.

About 1,800 people joined an anti-Trump rally near Trump International Hotel and Tower, chanting “No Trump! No KKK! No racist USA.”

“I’m just really terrified about what is happening in this country,” 22-year-old Adriana Rizzo in Chicago told Reuters.

LA authorities have started taking people into custody, LAPD Officer Tony Im told the Los Angeles Times.

At least 30 people have been arrested at demonstrations in Columbus Circle and Trump Tower in New York, police said, as cited by NBC 4 news.

Activists smashed store windows and attacked an abandoned police car in downtown Oakland, California. Protestors also smashed the windows of the Oakland Chamber of Commerce and started a fire on the ground floor of the building.

There have been scenes in the streets of people burning trash bins. They also smashed the windows of an abandoned police cruiser and, according to social media reports, set the vehicle on fire.

There was also another flag burning in Washington, DC.

Protesters set an effigy of Trump on fire at City Hall in downtown Los Angeles.

Protesters in Chicago got on top of a public bus while Chicago Transit Authority employees were still inside. The bus had a flat tire. Police eventually cleared the area.

A scuffle during the NYC protests was quashed when protesters removed the agitator while others chanted, “peaceful protest!”

The agitator allegedly threw glass bottles at police officers when he was grabbed by peaceful protesters and brought to the police. The NYPD allegedly responded with “high force,” according to one protester, who claimed that police then pushed a security gate into the protesters, forcing them into each other.

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) has started using Long Range Acoustic Devices (LRAD) to force the protesters to disperse. Protesters are trying to walk up to Trump Tower on 5th Avenue and 57th Street from 14th Street Union Square.

A flag burning was witnessed in front of Trump Tower in New York City.

Demonstrators in New York City, who generally appear to be younger voters of all races, made their way to Trump Tower. Along the way, “Not my president” and “F*** Trump” chants were heard, as were calls against excessive use of force by police, as people shouted, “from Ferguson to NYC, end police brutality.” 

At 14th and Broadway in New York City, a video was projected onto a wall, showing Trump with the words “narcissist,” “conman” and “1%er.”
