US army on US streets and fighting the pandemic (E335)

As demonstrators raged across the United States after the murder of George Floyd, the army hit the streets. The president, according to a recent poll, appeared to have full support in his deployment of the airborne division, perhaps even the marines, against his own people. But if you dress police like soldiers, they will behave as if they are at war, and that’s just what it looked like as images spread across social media. So, in an election year, with the pandemic wreaking havoc on the economy and pandemonium on the streets, who will be returned to Capitol Hill? We invited veteran TV and radio journalist and board member of the ACLU, Garland Nixon, to discuss this and more.

The coronavirus pandemic also continues to rage around the world with millions infected, hundreds of thousands losing their lives, and incalculable fiscal damage running into the trillions. At the same time, the World Health Organisation, who no one had a bad word to say about in the past, has again itself come under fire from the US, which now says it will withdraw from the organisation. Dr. Margaret Harris is a spokesperson for WHO, so we asked her how far, how wide, how deep this pandemic has gone, and just how much life is left in it.
