International politics has never been short of examples of policies producing consequences opposite to what was intended, or of a country’s bravado becoming its biggest liability, but rarely have we seen it come together so vividly and massively as in the Gaza conflict. Did it make the West, despite all the violence it underwrites, a hostage of its own scheming?
