Wayne Rooney arrested on suspicion of drink driving

Former England and Man United striker Wayne Rooney has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving near his home in Cheshire, England.

Rooney was returning from spending Thursday evening with friends at a bar in Alderley Edge, North West England, near to his £6 million ($7.7 million) mansion in nearby Prestbury, when he was pulled over by cops, the Mirror newspaper reports.

Police quizzed the striker, now plying his trade for Premier League side Everton, before arresting him on suspicion of drink driving.

It is understood Rooney trained at Everton’s Finch Farm early in the day, ahead of a gap in Premier League fixtures due to the international break.

Rooney lives at the property in Prestbury, around 15 miles from Manchester, with wife Coleen and their three children, Kai, Klay and Kit.

The couple revealed on Instagram on August 18 that they were expecting their fourth child.

Last week, Rooney also announced he would retire from international football, calling time on an England career that saw him become all-time top scorer for his country.

In 119 appearances for the Three Lions, Rooney scored 53 goals, two ahead of legendary World Cup winner Sir Bobby Charlton.

He also captained the side from 2014 until his retirement.

The player moved from Manchester United, where he was also all-time leading scorer and captain, to rejoin his boyhood club Everton, from where he joined United as an 18-year-old in 2004.
