Seven new disciplines seek debut at Sochi 2014

Seven new sporting disciplines may be added to the program of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, as the final event list has not yet been decided upon.

According to Ves Sport news agency, women’s ski jumping, mixed relay in biathlon, team figure skating and several other disciplines have a good chance of being presented at the Games in Russia.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) stated on Monday that the events will discover their fate after the next ski world championships.

“I believe by the end of April we should have a final decision of which events we need to put forward. At the same time, we also have to have some discussion with the organizing committee of the Sochi Games to make sure that it is possible for them,” Gilbert Felli, International Olympic Committee executive director for Olympic Games, said.

IOC President Jacques Rogge noted that the inclusion in the new disciplines into the Olympic program would not require extra sports facilities to be built.

If the Sochi event list expands, 96 sets of gold, silver and bronze medals will be up for grabs, which is ten more than the previous Winter Games in Vancouver this year.
