Russian explorers to help teens reach South Pole

They've just taken a bunch of intrepid teenagers on an expedition to the North Pole, but a duo of Russian explorers are already mapping out another trip to the opposite extreme – the South Pole.

The father and son team of Dmitry and Matvey Shparo have already organized five skiing quests to the North Pole.

“I’ve got a feeling that more and more people in this country have faith in us and understand exactly what we are doing,” Matvey Shparo said. “More and more people are willing to help us. So I don’t think that it would be too difficult to organize an expedition to the South Pole. And I would be proud to do it.”

And, with the backing of the influential Russian Geographical Society, more adventures are on the way.

“I welcome back the brave arctic travellers,” Konstantin Zaitsev from the Russian Association of Polar Explorers said. “I think it’s about time we’ve created a youth section in our association.”

The Shparo’s are planning to move out on their Antarctic conquest next year.
