Cocaine-addled quail is only the beginning: Rand Paul warns of fallout from impossible-to-pay-for inflation
Sen. Rand Paul, Congress’ most fervent deficit hawk, has warned that the US is poised to implode financially if it keeps spending ridiculous amounts of money on studying quail sex, while borrowing from the state it brands a rival.
Paul tore into Washington’s profligate spending on Friday, suggesting, if the US didn’t put a stop to its money-printing and borrowing addiction, the market was liable to self-correct and leave Americans carting around wheelbarrows full of worthless cash. And that would be all because their country had wasted its money studying the ins and outs of obscure animals’ behavior, or whether smiling selfies made the photo-taker happy, or other dubiously useful hypotheses.
NIH Spent over $800,000 to study whether Japanese Quails are more Sexually promiscuous on cocaine. I think we could have simply polled the audience….and of course found they are… pic.twitter.com/lZYlRbyuun

Not only was the nation $28 trillion in debt, but there was no legitimate reason, according to Paul, to spend money on goofy projects such as figuring out why lizards “waddle” when they walk, or the exact words uttered by US astronaut Neil Armstrong when he made his historical statement upon landing on the Moon.
#NationalScienceFoundation uses our tax $$ to study:If Neil Armstrong said “1 small step for man” or “1 small step for A man” Inconclusive. $700kIf Cocaine makes Japanese quail more sexual. $466k@SenRandPaul - ABSURD #Taxpayer Funded #Studieshttps://t.co/onCQ13gp87

When the time came for annual budget requests, Paul explained – a memorable poster behind him as he spoke advertising a National Institutes of Health (NIH) study titled ‘Cocaine and Risky Sex Habits of Quail’, with its government funding of $356,933.14 emblazoned below – researchers focused on one subject: all call their friends to cash in favors. Cocaine and quail enthusiasts in line, the lead researcher would then present his peers’ support as proof the latest quail-sex-cocaine study would get however much money it asked for, making the point that budgets only move in one direction: up.
While Paul has rolled out the quail poster before, the connection is a legitimate one. The NIH was the parent agency for both Fauci’s gain-of-function research and the study of drug-induced quail orgies.
While many were outraged – or at least amused – to hear where their taxpayers’ dollars were going…
$356k on cocaine and risky sex habits of quail. This is why I hate government and stan Rand Paul, because he points this crap out.Somebody defend this study and this money spent.I’m begging to hear it.

Did they make a tiny little dicso for the quail to get down in? Did they clothe them in silk shirts and gold chains?

…Paul’s nemeses came forward to denounce the quail/coke study as a dissertation in dishonesty.
All of us who care about science + who do publicly-funded research should be concerned about these tactics. Our enmity should not be only thrown at R@nd P*ul and his ilk. Our energy should be directed to the public, showing them how science is important. https://t.co/J60DDhJLqK

Besides being intrinsically ignorant, this is a decade old study that Tom Coburn used to cite in his "wastebook."The study sounds silly, but is just an animal model for understanding cocaine's effects on reward systems in the context of STD prevention. https://t.co/NZna1XO1HGhttps://t.co/s7togM0DKGpic.twitter.com/CPq2uIgzvK

Others defended using taxpayer dollars to study coked-up quail.
Oh, and that @sciam blog post from 2011 discussed in great detail about why one might want to study the effect of cocaine on quail sexual behavior. Worth a read. 5/end https://t.co/p0Fe5Aw3wCpic.twitter.com/ylY5XohJVl

It sure beats starting wars, though, no? Though some complained about the ethics of wasting the ‘good stuff’ on quail.
If Rand Paul's main gripe is about the barriers to human subject research, I'm with him. Don't waste the good stuff on quail. There are plenty of pre-meds who'd be more than happy to volunteer.

Paid for by the NIH with money that could have cured disease, the coked-up quails merely represent government waste in Paul’s view. But the NIH has also reportedly paid for gain-of-function research into bat coronaviruses, conducted in China and prohibited by the Centers for Disease Control – a much less harmless outlay that was, like the quails, nevertheless paid for by the US taxpayer.
When gain-of-function research was allowed to return to the US in December 2017, it was only after the National Institute for Allergies and Infectious Diseases head Anthony Fauci had allegedly ushered the taxpayer dollars overseas to continue the all-important research in Wuhan, China. When Paul confronted Fauci with this allegation earlier in May, Fauci denied gain-of-function research was involved, or that the NIH had ever funded the Wuhan lab. He later admitted to funding EcoHealth Alliance, however – a group that partners with the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China.
Also on rt.com Having shut down Trump’s Covid-19 origin probe, Biden now entrusts it to same spies who gave us ‘Russiagate’Dr. Fauci earlier this month did a surprise about-face on whether the novel coronavirus had emerged from a Wuhan wet market – the initial hypothesis, but one with which many experts found fault – or whether it had leaked from a lab. While he had long insisted on the wet market, he suddenly began suggesting the US investigate the lab-leak theory, which had been supported by former president Donald Trump.
The sudden shift in ‘official’ opinion was so shocking that Facebook had to change its censorship-based definition of reality, putting an end to its practice of removing posts arguing the coronavirus had indeed leaked from a lab in Wuhan. Some senior elements in Beijing, too, have renewed their claims that the coronavirus was brought to Wuhan by the US military, possibly during the Military World Games, held in October 2019.
