US immigration reform requires cooperation between USA, Mexico
The Latino movement in the US is working hard to pass immigration reform this year, and there will likely be many protests and rallies across the country to make this happen.
Juan Jose Gutierrez, the Director of the Latino Movement USA, came to Washington, DC to assist in the preparation for the state visit of Mexican President Felipe Calderon. US President Barack Obama and Calderon are to meet to discuss the bilateral relationship, the drug war, national security, the economy and immigration reform.
According to Gutierrez, immigration reform is vital for the whole Latino population in the United States.
“The whole situation is getting worse by the day. We saw what happened in Arizona, which is completely unbelievable in the 21st century,” said Gutierrez.
Paraphrasing Roger Cardinal Mahoney of Los Angeles, Gutierrez referred to the legislation in Arizona as “Nazi, fascist-like legislation that has become law, that’s un-American."
Serious dialogue concerning national security and immigration reform needs to take place between Obama and Calderon. Cooperation from both governments will be necessary in resolving the deep-seated issues over Latino immigration to the United States.
